We caught up with the iconic fashion designer on her new collection and where she frequents when visiting the Magic City.
For decades, fashion designer Betsey Johnson has been responsible for infusing our closets with whimsical designs featuring fun fabrics and bright, beautiful colors; so when it came time to create a special collection for the DreamWorks Trolls children’s movie (starring Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick) Johnson was the perfect fit.
We chatted with the fashion designer during her special in-store appearance and unveiling of the "xox Trolls" collection at Macy’s in Dadeland Mall about what inspirations she used from the movie for her designs, where she likes to spend time in Miami, and her advice for aspiring fashion designers.
What was it like to design the collection?
BETSEY JOHNSON: It was crazy fun and a great collaboration with DreamWorks! I loved making everything, and I think people will have fun wearing it.
How were you inspired by the movie?
BS: We took the vibrant colors and the crazy Trolls’ hair, and put a Betsey Johnson twist on it by adding some sparkle, glitter, and my tutus. Everything is really happy and colorful—you can’t help but feel happy when wearing a piece from the collection. It’s also the kind of fun that people don’t normally have in their closets. It’s special.
Do you have a favorite piece?
BS: I love the pink foxtail handbag dangle. I like to attach it to my bag or my belt when I’m wearing a dress. It adds that extra "something" to any outfit.
If the clothes could talk, what would they say?
BS: They wouldn’t talk but they would sing, dance, and rock and roll. And when wearing the clothes, you will too!
Go-to spots when you’re in Miami?
BS: I usually like to hang out at the Delano—it’s just so beautiful there. The Fontainebleau Miami Beach is amazing, too. I used to go there with girls [who worked at my store] back in the day. A lot of the other hot spots I once loved have closed, but Miami is always coming out with new, great places. I also love to come here for Swim Week. It is such a big event with so much to do, and the swimwear is fantastic.
What's your favorite Miami memory?
BS: I still remember opening up my boutique years ago on 10th and Washington Avenue! Being in the heart of South Beach was such a great experience.
What advice would you give to aspiring designers?
BS: You have to love it. Create a picture book of the history of fashion so you know and learn the industry you are in. Be creative and always keep your eyes open.
